As summer approaches, booking trends confirm that the French remain loyal to certain destinations… but other lesser-known or less popular places also deserve your attention, especially if you’re still wondering where to go. Here are the key data, trends, and our recommendations for a smarter, more successful summer.

Where are the French traveling in summer 2025?

According to an Ipsos study, 67% of French people plan to spend their summer holidays in France, well above the European average. Another survey by GreenGo confirms this trend, with 74% of French travelers choosing to stay within the country.

> The most popular regions:

  • Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (26%)

  • Brittany (22%)

  • Occitanie (22%)

These figures highlight a strong attachment to coastal regions and destinations already well-known to the public. The sea remains the number one motivation for travel, with 65% of French holidaymakers choosing it, compared to 25% for the countryside, 23% for the mountains, and 22% for city breaks.

> Abroad is most appealing to young travelers

For those traveling outside France, 26% choose a European destination, particularly among 18–34-year-olds (34%). Long-haul destinations remain a minority but stable (13%).

> International destinations in high demand:

  • Bali, topping international searches

  • Porto, highly popular for its accessibility and atmosphere

  • Essaouira (+147%) and Fez (+64%), two Moroccan cities experiencing strong growth in interest

These destinations reflect a growing appetite for sunny cities, accessible via direct flights and offering a strong cultural immersion.

> 5 underrated destinations for summer 2025

If you haven’t booked your summer vacation yet, here are five interesting alternatives, far from the crowds and offering excellent value for money.

     1. Albania – Albanian Riviera, Saranda

Still little-known a few years ago, Albania is attracting more and more travelers. The beaches of the Albanian Riviera (Ksamil, Dhermi, Saranda) rival those of Greece or Italy… at half the price. A week there often costs less than €600, flights included, with simple accommodation.

Why go? Untouched beaches, Mediterranean vibes, delicious local food, and affordable prices despite rising tourism.

     2. Bulgaria – Sunny Beach, Sofia

Bulgaria remains one of Europe’s most affordable countries. Whether for partying in Sunny Beach or cultural visits in Sofia, the cost of living is 30–40% lower than in Spain or Italy.

Best for: small budgets, sea lovers, young couples, or backpackers.

     3. Portugal – Algarve and Madeira

Still popular, Portugal remains one of Western Europe’s most accessible countries, with very competitive prices outside Lisbon. The Algarve offers beaches and nature, while Madeira attracts hiking enthusiasts and fans of volcanic landscapes.

Good to know: direct flights to Madeira are available at very attractive prices if booked early.

     4. Greece – Corfu, Crete, Athens off-season

Despite its tourist success, Greece is still a great option if you avoid the Cyclades in peak August. Islands like Corfu and Crete, or lesser-known areas of the mainland, provide calm, authenticity, and affordable accommodation.

Consider: Athens in July or early September, when the crowds are gone and prices drop.

     5. Montenegro & Croatia – Kotor, Poreč

Both countries offer spectacular coastlines at far more reasonable costs than Italy or the French Riviera. Kotor (Montenegro) is a hidden gem between sea and mountains, while Croatia remains an excellent choice for nature lovers and crystal-clear waters.

                           Why choose these alternative destinations?

  • Overall cost often 20–40% lower than ultra-touristy spots

  • Fewer crowds, even in August: perfect for avoiding packed beaches

  • A more authentic, calmer experience without giving up comfort

  • Often cheaper flights with Ryanair, EasyJet, or Wizzair

Our tips if you book now:

  • Compare flights with tools like Skyscanner, Ulysse, or Booking to find the cheapest dates

  • Book directly with accommodations to avoid intermediary fees

  • If traveling outside the EU, check entry requirements (visa, health insurance, vaccination)

Summer 2025 will be marked by a strong preference for holidays in France, but very attractive opportunities exist abroad, often cheaper and calmer. If you’re still undecided, consider Albania, Bulgaria, Portugal, Greece, or Montenegro for a refreshing summer while keeping your budget in check.
